Glacier from air

This was our first glimpse of a glacier.  Carla took this picture from the plane window.  We could see the tops of the mountains and the glacier above the clouds.  Although it was cloudy, we were able to see some of the inside passage and a cruise ship as we flew north to Juneau.

The Mendenhall Glacier is about 10 miles from downtown Juneau. We took this picture from the Skaters Cabin on Mendenhall Lake.  The view from our room is even better.  We will be hiking along the east side of the glacier tomorrow.

Juneau from Douglas Island

Here is a picture of Downtown Juneau taken from Douglas Island just across the Gastineau Channel.  We drove to Douglas Island to have dinner at Mike's, a popular local eatery.  They had Makers Mark which made Carla very happy!

Juneau, the 'Forest Capital', is surrounded by temperate rain forests.  Everything is lush and green with many, many species of plants.  Some of the native wild flowers are in bloom.
