'Bear Sightings'

Float Plane and Us

We went bear watching at the Pack Creek Bear Sanctuary on Admiralty Island.  It is a 1/2 hour float plane trip from Juneau.  Yes, we were pretty excited to be there!

This is a brown bear.  It's poking around the ruins of a cabin near the mouth of Pack Creek.  It came out to the waters edge and started eating sedge grass.

Bear at Cabin

Bear in perspective

Here's Karen's butt.  This picture is only included to show the small brown speck in the background which happens to be a bear.

Another brown bear.  Admirlty Island has the highest concentration of brown bears in South East Alaska.  The estimated population is 1,500.  This sow came down to the beach forcing us out on a sand spit.  We waited quietly for her to pass.

Butch and Carla on Trail

We hiked a mile up into the rain forest.  It was a nice trail with loud crunchy gravel to let the bears know we were coming.  There was recent evidence of bears on the trial (which answered the age old question regarding bear sanitary habits).

This is Butch, our wonderful pilot and guide.  He is the owner of Alaska Fly and Fish.  Check out their site for some cool bear and glacier pictures.  Thanks Butch!

Waterfall

Carla took this photo of a waterfall from the floatplane.  We were hoping to see humpback whales in the channel but had no luck.  Hopefully we will see them on the cruise next week.
