A Three Hour Tour

Floatplane Dock

On my last day in Ketchikan, I went on a 'bush pilot' tour.  Basically, a mail plane is going out to make deliveries and you pay to fly along and see the sights.  I took this picture while we waited for the parcels and mail bags to be loaded.

First stop was a logging camp on Prince of Wales Island.  I included this picture because, for once, I got to sit in the front seat!  Notice the low clouds.  It was good visit these little working towns.  So much of my time has been in the parks and monuments that I forgot that I wasn't in 'AlaskaLand'.  If you look close you can see that portions of this island have been clear cut.

logs on beaches

There is a pulp mill in Ketchikan and many of the islands around it have been logged.  It seems all of the beaches are littered with trees.  That is what the red is in this picture.   A logger at the camp told me they don't out and pick these up because they are no good.

After a stop at Hollis and Kassan, we landed at a sport fishing camp called Sportsman's Cove.  And, finally, I spotted a Sitka Black Tailed Deer.  The red on his shoulders is his summer coat, the rest is the shaggy winter coat he will shed over the summer.  There was also a doe near by.   All of the boats were out of the cove because there are no salmon or halibut left on this side of the island.  The boats travel down the channel and around to the other side to find fish.

When we landed in Sportsman's Cove, we heard over the radio that the other pilots returning to Ketchikan were turning back because the weather had gotten so bad over the channel.  Dave, the pilot, said 'there are worse places to get stuck' and we headed up the steps to the lodge dining room.  They brought us coffee and cookies and we sat down to wait for the weather to clear.

This is what it looked like after the weather 'got better'.  I got back about 90 minutes late from a three hour trip.   Dave got us back safely and it we got to take an extra hop in the harbor because we brought back a passenger from Sportsman's Cove who was scheduled on a later flight no body expected to actually make it out to the cove.  500' Ceiling
