Can you see me? by David Dillon

The best thing I hope you learn while you are here is how important you are. I will try to share with you some of the things that I have learned. Everyone has a purpose and a place in this world. If you don't know yours, I will help you look.

For the majority of us that are unhappy and lonely, it is because we have lost our personal power. We lose this inner strength by giving it away or by letting someone steal it from us. Now, we can and must learn how to take back our power and find happiness. The choice is ours!  By learning to be kind to ourselves and learning to respect ourselves we will make our world a better place.  How we see the world is how we treat ourselves.  Now, we must learn to see the world in a brighter light.

While you are here I would like you to know my people better.  Pine Ridge Reservation is in the poorest county in the United States.  There is almost no employment and drugs and alcohol is a major problem.  It is a place where some of the Tribal Police are corrupt and the raping of minors is known to happen.

I pulled into the house of my friend/family and was greeted with love and warmth by the eleven people there that lived in that 2 bedroom house.  I had stopped an hour before (at the closest bakery) to bring donuts for everyone's breakfast.  After we ate the five year old girl came up to me and told me thank you and showed me that she had wrapped up the two remaining donuts and put them in the freezer.  I asked if she was going to eat them later.  She said no that this year she would now have a birthday cake and she would be six in April (9 months away).  I hugged her tight as tears ran down my face.

I have never found such warmth and good humor as I have here.  Once after we shared some good laughs I asked how can anyone have the warmth and humor that they have.  The answer shocked me.  I was told that sometimes that is all they have!  And then I heard the man say, the sad thing was in this day and time the best way for them to learn to be Indian was to learn it from a white man.

Now you know how it is today.
